Sushi Night II

Natalie and Amanda have put together another Sushi Night at Coo Japanese Izakaiya. We’re booked in for TuesdayOctober 11th, from 6:00pm. We will have a private sushi making class hosted by the owner Mamoru-san, and then get to eat our (and his) handiwork. All are welcome. Last time folks brought family and friends along, and we have room for 30 people or so. Cost is $20 per person, which gets you food and professional instruction in the finer points of ‘roll your own’. If we can get 25 folks or more signed up Mamoru-san will give us a discount (and maybe some sushi rolling mats!). We need numbers by 8th October so contact me ASAP to sign up.

Hi All!

Sorry to have been remiss in updates! Things at the ANU have become a bit problematic as of late, which means that I’ve been scrambling there and so have failed to write for a while. That said, here goes nothing!

September Oshaberikai

The first Wednesday of the month is upon us, and that means one thing… Oshaberikai! Our next monthly get together will be Wednesday September 7th at Coo Izakaiya in Civic. Please RSVP with me at imoriyama05 so that we can get an accurate head count.

I know we’ve got some new sign-ups who may not have attended the event before so here’s how it works. RSVP with me by tomorrow 12:00pm, and we’ll get you a seat. Things kick off at 6:00pm at Coo (15 East Row, Civic).

Usually we have about 15-20 JET Alumni, Japanese ex-pats, and other folks with Japan related experience or an interest in the country. It’s a great opportunity to network or just meet other members of the Australia/Japan community.

A bit of news from our friends at AJS, just in case you haven’t seen it yet.

It is my pleasure to invite you to our Annual Dinner on Friday 23rd September. His Excellency Ambassador Sato will be our special guest and Dr Carol Hayes will be our guest speaker. We will also be celebrating the contribution of our Past Presidents and many will be attending. Details of the dinner can be found in the accompanying attachment.

Special Program for Tohoku JETs: You can go home again!

At Steph’s request I am reposting the information I sent out in the special bulletin earlier today.

Those who spent 2+ years in Tohoku TAKE NOTE!

Dear JETAA members,

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Japan Tourism Agency has arranged for a special program to be introduced whereby members of the JET Alumni Association can travel to Japan’s disaster areas for one week.

The following conditions apply:

• The JETAA member must have worked for 2 years + as either an ALT or CIR in Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima Prefectures or Sendai city and will travel back to that area
• There are no limits for age
• They must be able to directly contact a school and local government to where they were assigned
• They have to be accepted by the organisations where they worked and be able to arrange some exchange activities with that organisation
• They have to be able to travel to Japan without an escort
• Be able to send out the information on their experiences of their stay and their viewpoints on the visit to the mass media, blogs, homepages and face book
• The stay is for one week during the period of July to September (at a time nominated by the successful candidate)
• It begins with a stay in Tokyo for one night, then 3-4 nights in the former contracting organisation and one night at a neighbouring tourist site. Unfortunately the stay is restricted and it is not possible to continue a holiday in Japan after completing the program
• The Japanese government will cover the international flight expenses, travel expenses in Japan, stay and meals, insurance etc
• The expenses the participant would need to cover are travel expenses in your home country, individual expenses eg phone calls etc- this is all outlined in the application documents available from me or the consulate.

The basic idea of the program is to have past jets visit their area, interact with their former contracting organisation, students and teachers, and then share that experience with people back in their home country.

The deadline for submissions is July 20.

I’ve sent around the original e-mail which should have the paper work attached.

As we do every year we will be hosting a small Q&A session for our departing JETs.

If you are interested in helping out this year, please let me know ASAP.

We’re going to try to get something together in the next couple of weeks.

In the aftermath of the grand trivia night last week we decided to push back our monthly Oshaberikai to this coming Wednesday the 8th of June.

As usual we will be at Coo Izakaiya in Civic from 6pm. Please RSVP with me at imoriyama05 so we can get an accurate head count for the table.

I also must apologize to those who showed up last week. Apparently we had at least one forlorn Oshaberikai-er who showed up to find no one there. I had meant to send out an e-mail notifying folks of the change of date, but was unable to get it done in time. I’m sorry for not letting folks know sooner.

Trivia Night

As many of you know, last Tuesday 30th of May we held our Trivia Night fundraising event.

Thanks very much to Keith, Peter, Amanda, Natalie, Luke and Yoshi for all your help in coordinating and facilitating the event! Most especially thanks to Keith for agreeing to use his considerable skills as Quizmaster to ensure that the evening went fantastically. Also, a big thank you to the Japanese Embassy, both for taking the time to come out and have some fun with us and for the loan of the PA equipment.

Finally thank you to everyone who came out. We had folks from various government departments, Japan related groups in Canberra, and even a group of students from ANU!

We’re still getting exact numbers tallied about how much the event managed to raise, but I’ll have them by next week. Watch this space!

Upcoming Japan Relief Events

Speaking of fundraisers:
The next Canberra Youth Orchestra concert on 10 June 2011 (7pm, Llewellyn Hall) will be held as a charity appeal for the victims of the Japanese earthquake earlier this year.

The concert features two works by living composers, Andrian Pertout and Kanako Okamoto and both will be premieres. Both composers will be in attendance and there will be a pre-concert talk with them about their works – time tbc.

All ticket sales and donations received by CYM for this concert will be given to the charity appeal.

The concert, which also includes Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis, will be 1 hour in length – the perfect length for families! Furthermore, all audience members under the age of 18 will be admitted free of charge.

So come along to hear the superb musicians of Canberra Youth Orchestra for this worthwhile cause!

AJSACT Shinnenkai Part Duex

Some news from our friends with the AJS; both an additional Shinnenkai and a bit of golf!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our Shinnenkai at Kagawa Restaurant on Thursday 10th February. The interest was so great we were not able to accommodate everyone on that evening so will be holding another Shinnenkai on Tuesday 1st March at 6.30PM. Kagawa are offering a different menu so any who attended the last dinner are welcome to attend this next dinner, although preference will be given to those who were unable to be accommodated on the 10th. As those who attended on the 10th can attest, the food is excellent and the atmosphere lively. Don’t hesitate, join us at Kagawa on the 1st March.

On Saturday 5th March we will be holding our Pitch n Putt Day from 4PM at the Canberra International Golf Centre, Narrabundah.

Start of Summer BBQ

Just a reminder that our Start of Summer BBQ will take place in TWO WEEKS!

The event will take place at Nara Park on the 12th of December. The grills fire up at noon.

Oceania Annual Conference

The annual Oceania JETAA conference took place from the 18th to the 22nd in Perth this year. I had a family emergency that called me back to the States, and so was unable to attend. However, Lachlan Grant was kind enough to step in and make the trek to sunny WA on our behalf. Details of the conference, and issues discussed, will follow in upcoming newsletters. A HUGE thank you to Lachlan for stepping up to the plate on such short notice and providing JETAA Canberra with representation at the event.
